Tour start: Vilnius Town Hall, Didžioji St. 31, Vilnius
Discover Jewish Vilnius, once known as the Jerusalem of Lithuania (Yerushalayim de Lita), a city that for centuries was one of the most important centres of Jewish religious scholarship, culture and intellectual life in Europe. This private walking tour takes us through the heart of historic Jewish Vilnius, where narrow streets, hidden courtyards and surviving landmarks reveal the fascinating story of a community that helped shape the city's identity.
We will explore Stiklių, Žydų, Gaono and other historic streets, discover the site of the magnificent Great Synagogue of Vilnius, and learn about the Vilnius Gaon, one of the most influential Jewish scholars in history. We will talk about Jewish religious traditions, schools, trade, craftsmanship, Yiddish culture and the everyday life of the Litvaks – the Jews of Lithuania.
Along the way, we will encounter the story of Dr. Tsemakh Shabad, a beloved physician remembered for his kindness and dedication to the people of Vilnius. We will also explore the former Small and Large Ghettos, remembering the lives of those who suffered during the Nazi occupation, the resistance within the ghetto, and the tragedy of the Holocaust. But Jewish Vilnius is much more than a story of loss. It is also a story of faith, learning, literature, music, remarkable personalities and a rich cultural heritage that continues to resonate around the world.
Whether you have family roots in Lithuania, a personal connection to Jewish history, or simply wish to discover another fascinating side of Vilnius, this tour offers an intimate and meaningful encounter with the historic Jerusalem of Lithuania.
